In the beginning, God created the heaven and the earth. The earth was without any form and was void. Darkness was upon the face of the deep and the spirit of God moved upon the face of the waters. And God said, "let there be light" and there was light. The light was good and God divided the light from the darkness. God called the light day and the darkness He called night. On the second day, God created the firmament in the midst of the waters. On the third day, He ordered the dry land to appear and it did. God called the dry land earth and the waters He called sea. God commanded the earth to bring forth grass, trees and its fruits. On the fourth day, God made the sun, the moon and the stars. So also on the fifth day, God created all the living creatures. He created the fish of the sea and other living creatures living therein; birds of the air and their kinds and God saw that they were good. He commanded them to multiply in the sea and on the land. God created animals of various kinds on the sixth day. The same day, He created man in His own image. In the image of God, created He him. God commanded man to be fruitful and multiply. On the seventh day God rested.

He called a meeting of all the elders, heads of families, judges, and officers of Israel. He said, “I am now very old. You have seen what the Lord has done to our enemies to help us. The Lord your God fought for you.  Remember that your people have been given their land between the Jordan River and the Mediterranean Sea in the west, the land I promised to give you.  The Lord your God will force out the people living there. The Lord will push them out ahead of you. And you will own the land, as he has promised you. “Be strong. You must be careful to obey everything commanded in the Book of the Teachings of Moses. Do not stray from it either from the left or the right.  Don’t become friends with the people living among us who are not Israelites. Don’t say the names of their gods or make anyone swear by them. Don’t serve or worship them.  You must continue to follow the Lord your God, as you have done in the past.

 “The Lord has forced many great and powerful nations to leave ahead of you. No nation has been able to defeat you. With his help, one Israelite could defeat a thousand, because the Lord your God fights for you, as he promised to do.  So you must be careful to love the Lord your God.  “If you turn away from the way of the Lord and become friends with these people who are not part of Israel and marry them, the Lord your God will not help you defeat your enemies. They will be like traps for you, like whips on your back and thorns 'copied from e x a m p l a z a . c o m free' in your eyes, and none of you will be left in this good land the Lord your God has given you.  “It’s almost time for me to die. You know and fully believe that the Lord has done great things for you. You know that he has not failed to keep any of his promises. Every good promise that the Lord your God made has come true, and in the same way, his other promises will come true. He promised that evil will come to you and that he will destroy you from this good land that he gave you.  This will happen if you don’t keep your agreement with the Lord your God. If you go and serve other gods and worship them, the Lord will become very angry with you. Then none of you will be left in this good land he has given you.”

Jesus called his twelve disciples to Him and gave them authority to drive out evil spirits and to heal every disease and sicknesses. He sent them out with the instructions not to go among the Gentiles, or enter any town of the Samaritans, but to go rather to the lost sheep of Israel. As they go, they should preach the message saying “The Kingdom of heaven is near.” They should heal the sick, raise the dead, cleanse those that had leprosy, drive out demons. They received without pay and also gave without pay. They should take no gold, nor silver, nor copper in their belts, nor bag for the journey, nor extra tunic, nor sandals, nor a staff. Jesus said the worker is worth his keep. Whatever town or village they entered, they should search for some worthy person there and stay at his house until they leave. As they enter the house, they should first salute the house with peace. If the house is deserving, let their peace rest on it; if it is not, let their peace return to them. If anyone will not welcome them or listen to their words, they should shake off the dust from their feet when they leave that home or town. It would be more bearable for Sodom and Gomorrah on the day of Judgment than for that town.

The Philippians dispatched through Epaphroditus some monetary gift to Paul while he was in prison in Rome. To show his gratitude and appreciation for the gift from the church which he had founded, Paul wrote to the church expressing his gratitude. His joy, however, was based on the spirit of sacrifice that motivated their action. In giving and receiving, the Philippians received Paul and God’s approval. He (Paul), therefore, prayed that God might continue to satisfy all their needs according to His riches in glory as long as they sustained their faith in Christ Jesus. In other words the Philippians sent him a generous gift and it is like spring has bloomed. So giving thanks is what Paul does in these verses. And giving generously is what the Philippians did for Paul. And both giving thanks and giving generously is who Christ is and what Christians do.
