Adah, a girl born in Nigeria during the Second World War, depicts her struggle against the patriarchal and colonial hegemonic structure.
Although Adah is the elder child of the family, she is not wanted by her parents just because of her gender. She was a girl who arrived when everyone was expecting and predicting a boy. So, since she was such a disappointment to her parents, her immediate family, and her tribe, nobody thought of recording her birth. She was so insignificant.
While Adah is thus discriminated against, her younger brother is always appreciated and encouraged. Since little Adah is not allowed to attend school as a part of this patriarchal order in the community, she finds a way on her own to challenge the norms at that age. She hopes that her teacher at school will understand her desire to be educated. Adah also takes the risk of being beaten by her family due to her desire.
Adah tries to act like an independent character, but she is surrounded by restrictive discourses, which turn her into the ultimate other wherever she goes. As she grows up, her desire to have proper education is also considered inappropriate by her relatives. After she decides to get married to protect herself from familial oppression, her husband and his family appear as new forms of oppression. Adah strives to overcome these boundaries, and her marriage with Francis turns out to be a continuation of this hegemonic relationship.
Despite her education and qualities, which enable her to go to Britain to lead a decent life, Adah is othered again by the white English community due to her being a black woman immigrant in Britain. Under these circumstances, Adah Obi is presented as the ultimate form of the othering process that results from the colonial discourse.
She is instantly demoted to second-class citizen status, discriminated against by the political superstructure that is tainted by racial prejudices in the UK. Adah is determined and resilient, looking out for her survival, and most of her actions are motivated by her drive to fulfil her dream.

Heathcliff: He is the main character, an orphan, brought to live at Wuthering Heights by Mr. Earnshaw. Heathcliff falls into an intense, unbreakable love with Mr. Earnshaw’s daughter Catherine. After Mr. Earnshaw dies, his resentful son Hindley abuses Heathcliff and treats him as a servant. Because of her desire for social prominence, Catherine marries Edgar Linton instead of Heathcliff. Heathcliff’s humiliation and misery prompt him to spend most of the rest of his life seeking revenge on Hindley, his beloved Catherine, and their respective children. He is a powerful, fierce, and often cruel man. Heathcliff acquires a fortune and uses his extraordinary powers of will to acquire both Wuthering Heights and Thrushcross Grange, the estate of Edgar Linton.

Linton: He is Heathcliff’s son by Isabella. Weak, snivelling, demanding, and constantly ill, Linton is raised in London by his mother and does not meet his father until he is thirteen years old when he goes to live with him after his mother’s death. Heathcliff despises Linton, treats him contemptuously, and, by forcing him to marry the young Catherine, uses him to cement his control over Thrushcross Grange after Edgar Linton’s death. Linton himself dies not long after this marriage.

Hareton: He is the son of Hindley and Frances Earnshaw. Hareton is Catherine’s nephew. After Hindley’s death, Heathcliff assumes custody of Hareton, and raises him as an uneducated field worker, just as Hindley had done to Heathcliff himself. Thus, Heathcliff uses Hareton to seek revenge on Hindley. Illiterate and quick-tempered, Hareton is easily humiliated but shows a good heart and a deep desire to improve himself. At the end of the novel, he marries young Catherine.
